Arsene Wenger should splash the cash on star turns such as Romelu Lukaku and Virgil van Dijk to appease Arsenal fans, says John Hartson.
The Gunners are expected to be active in the summer transfer market after slipping out of the Premier League’s top four.
They will not have Champions League football to use as a bargaining chip but remain an attractive proposition to players around the world.
Wenger has, however, been urged to break from tradition and loosen the purse strings by bidding for talent that can really make a difference at Emirates Stadium.
Former Gunners striker Hartson told Radio 5 Live: "I think there will be protests if he stays.
"I think a lot of the supporters want to see a change at Arsenal. That being at the top — the manager.
"But what would appease the supporters is if he brought in some really big names and he makes a statement then by saying, 'Well, we've got a strong enough squad'.
"Say, for instance, Romelu Lukaku becomes available at Everton, £60m, whatever it is. Van Dijk for example, £50m.
"Arsene, the fans are saying, 'Please be in for these players'. Don't be £5m out, blah, blah, blah, whatever it is."
It is yet to be confirmed that Wenger, who has faced protests against his continued presence at the helm, will be staying on for the 2017-18 campaign.
He is, however, expected to be offered an extension to an expiring contract and be offered the opportunity to build on a much-needed FA Cup triumph.
