Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius will be at Melwood early next week to finalise a £4.7million switch to Liverpool, Goal can reveal.
The 22-year-old, who has amassed 91 Bundesliga appearances, is expected to be confirmed as a new signing by Wednesday and will rival Simon Mignolet as the club’s number one.
Adam Bogdan will be let go, while Danny Ward is expected to join Huddersfield on a season-long loan to gain greater experience.
As reported over the weekend, Jurgen Klopp highlighted Karius as a premier target as he seeks to strengthen the Reds’ rearguard ahead of his first full season at the helm.
Initially, the Germany Under-21 international’s release clause was understood to be just under £8 million, but that figure was skewered with Liverpool able to do business for almost half of that.
The stopper has already sampled English football, having spent two years with Manchester City’s youth team from 2009 to 2011.
Karius will join Schalke’s Joel Matip and Serbian starlet Marko Grujic as confirmed acquisitions for next season, while the Reds will also step up their pursuit of Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell.
Arsenal were keen on signing the 19-year-old, but he has told the Premier League champions Anfield is his destination of choice.
Liverpool continue to wait on Mario Gotze over assurances on his future.
