Juergen Klopp has won many plaudits for his sterling work with Borussia Dortmund
in the last two seasons but it could have been so different had he joined their rivals Hamburger SV
, according to the Hamburger Morgenpost
Klopp was the first-choice candidate of Hamburg general manager Bernd Hoffmann and indeed the Mainz coach favoured a move to die Rothosen over Dortmund. After the two had come to an agreement over a contract, including a promise by Klopp that he would lower his profile as a "television coach", the move seemed destined to happen.,
However, Hoffmann did not have the support of the club's chief executive Dietmar Beiersdorfer who wanted to retain ultimate control of sporting matters and appoint Fred Rutten, who would go on to flop at Schalke 04.
In the end, the compromise candidate was Dutchman Martin Jol who lasted a season before departing for his homeland and Ajax. Bruno Labbadia followed before Armin Veh took the reigns on a full-time basis after a caretaker stint from Ricardo Moniz.
Klopp ended up at Dortmund and led them to fifth place in his first season. Der BVB
are now four points clear at the top of the league, ten points ahead of Hamburg who are joint sixth.
