Young-Pyo Lee will return to the Vancouver Whitecaps for 2013 season

The 35-year-old Korean full back committed to the Whitecaps for another season, ending speculation that he would retire in the near future. While many other clubs are busy attaining pieces from elsewhere in the league, the Vancouver Whitecaps have managed to secure a key component from within ahead of the 2013 season.

The club announced Thursday that defender Young-Pyo Lee would be staying with the 'Caps for another season, putting an end to speculation that the 35-year-old was ready to hang up his boots.

The former Korean international was a steadying influence on a much-improved Vancouver backline in 2011. His vast experience was not something that the club wanted to lose out on, which is why Lee's option was picked up.

The final piece of the puzzle fell into place when the former Tottenham, Ajax, and Borussia Dortmund player decided to honor the final year of his deal rather than retire.

“We’re thrilled that Lee has decided to return for a second season in Vancouver,” Whitecaps head coach Martin Rennie told the team's website. “He was a cornerstone of our backline last year and a leader on the squad.

"Not only does he bring world-class talent, but also a wealth of experience that will continue to benefit his teammates.”

In his first season with Vancouver, Lee played every minute in all but one of the Whitecaps' 34 regular season matches, chipping in one goal and four assists. He also played the full 90 minutes of the team's lone playoff appearance, a 2-1 loss to Los Angeles.
