The Mexican players made their country proud by picking up honors in the Spanish league.Mexicans reaped a pair of awards in Spain this week, highlighting the important roles played by Andres Guardado and Carlos Vela in that country’s club football.

Guardado, who spent last season with Deportivo La Coruna in the Spanish second flight, was named the league's top attacking midfielder for the 2011-12 campaign by the Liga Professional de Futbol.

“It’s always nice, it’s flattering,” Guardado told press in accepting the award. “It’s always a proud moment to have your work recognized. In general terms as an individual and also in the collective sense, it was spectacular in every sense.”

Guardado had 11 goals and 12 assists in 33 appearances for Depor last season, by far his best as a professional since leaving Atlas for Spain in 2007.

While Guardado’s award was voted on by players and coaches, it was a group of fans of Real Sociedad who selected Mexican forward Carlos Vela as their player of the year.

After scoring a team-high 12 goals for Real Sociedad last season, Vela was named player of the year by the fan group Pena Realista El Sur in a ceremony in San Sebastian on Monday.
