Salcido saddened by Mexico's fans

The El Tri veteran says that the actions of the fans during Mexico's draw with Jamaica was saddening for him.

El Tri veteran Carlos Salcido left Estadio El Azteca on Wednesday with a profound sense of sadness, thanks to the insults Mexican fans reigned down on the team during the scoreless draw with Jamaica.

With Jamaica at times taking the game to El Tri in their own house, fans reacted strongly against their team and coach Jose Manuel de la Torre.

“It makes me sad, I’ll be honest,” said Salcido, who started the match in midfield alongside Hector Herrera. “It’s been a long time under the Professor [de la Torre] since we’ve played that badly. We’ve been getting good results, and sometimes those boos improve the rival’s confidence.”

The Mexican fans, who filled El Azteca to about half capacity for the Hexagonal opener, quickly grew tired of their teams’ inability to dominate the Caribbean side.

At one point in the second half, the fans even decided to chant “ole” for the Jamaicans as they strung together series of passes, frustrating the home side.

“These things are a little sad,” said Salcido. “But for the next game, if we win here, I hope they keep cheering.”

Mexico next plays at home on March 26, when the United States visits El Azteca.
