The veteran is confident the Tricolor can mix it with the cream of international football and foresees a bright future for the nation following their recent youth successes.Gerardo Torrado claims Mexico no longer has the "inferiority complex" that previously held the team back in major tournaments.

Barring the Gold Cup, El Tri's only notable triumph remains the 1999 Confederations Cup, but ahead of their opening match against Italy in this year's edition of the World Cup prelude, the midfielder is backing his country to rise to the occasion.

"We've got rid of that inferiority complex we once had. These days Mexican players know they can compete and they've got the belief and the technique to succeed," the 34-year-old said in an interview with "It won't be easy, but then the Confederations Cup never is. You're up against the best teams in the world and the competition is very stiff.

"All the same time, I think we'll have some good games. I think Mexico will perform well and we'll be looking to go as far as possible."

While the senior team has had it's struggles, Mexico has excelled at youth levels, twice winning the Under-17 World Cup and claiming gold at the 2012 Olympic Games.

With that in mind, Torrado is confident that the players succeeding in the junior sides could go on to replicate the Confederations Cup victory of 14 years ago.

"I was just starting out as a professional, and the fact that the coach had faith in me and that we then won the title [in 1999] is something that had a big impact on my career," he said. "We showed the world that Mexico had a setup to be proud of and could play good football and take on the very best.

"[Our recent youth successes] just shows the amount of work that's been done with the youth teams. It’s a sign that Mexico are pushing really hard to become a contender in the major tournaments."
