Man City's new defensive addition to the Etihad

The Premier League side have joined rivals Manchester United in installing anti-shatter glass at their home ground as they look to boost security

Manchester City have sought to strengthen their defence at the Etihad Stadium by installing anti-shatter glass.

Pep Guardiola’s side have struggled to keep the back door bolted at times this season, with Liverpool the only side in the Premier League’s top seven to have been breached on more occasions.

Gabriel Jesus could miss rest of season

City have, however, moved to counter the threat of a potential terrorist attack at their home ground.

Anti-shatter film is to be wrapped around the glass panes at the imposing entrance to the 55,000-seater venue in an effort to boost security.

The club have also banned any vehicle from driving directly around the stadium, according to the Daily Mail.

City’s arch-rivals Manchester United have already taken similar measures at Old Trafford.

They installed anti-shatter glass in January and became the first side in the English top-flight to appoint a counter-terrorism officer.

Guardiola: Mooy has been amazing

All clubs were sent a letter at the start of the Premier League season asking them to be extra vigilant, as packed sporting stadiums become a target for extremists.

A bomb attack left 44 people dead at Besiktas’ home ground in December 2016, while the Stade de France was targeted as part of the Paris attacks in 2015.
